Trauma

Trauma can create a tremendous sense of fear and leave you with sense that the world is not a safe place. I have expertise working with people who have experienced recent or distant trauma in their lives and still struggle with its consequences and I strongly believe in people's resiliency and ability to overcome even the most heartbreaking experiences.

During traumatic experiences people develop survival mechanisms, but when trauma ends these reactions are not functional any more and can actually end up doing harm. Healing from trauma involves recognizing which of these mechanisms are destructive and relearning and replacing them with useful ones. Healing from a traumatic past is possible through psychotherapy, in a safe, nonjudgmental, and predictable environment, where painful memories can be worked through together.
